Then there were those who used old videos of the rapper in an effort to slut-shame her.

Many Twitter users, however, slammed Hard Kaur. While some users pointed out that freedom of expression comes “with restrictions”, others went as far as to request the government to cancel Kaur’s Overseas Citizenship of India (OCI) card.

UK-based rapper Taran Kaur Dhillon aka Hard Kaur has been booked for sedition for posting allegedly objectionable remarks against Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath and RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat on social media.

The complaint was filed by Varanasi lawyer Shashank Shekhar on Wednesday, Cantonment station house officer Vijay Pratap Singh said.

The police have booked her for sedition (under IPC Section 124 A), promoting enmity between different groups on religious grounds (153A), defamation (Section 500) and for intent to incite others (Section 505) and also Section 66 of the Information Technology Act.

In her Instagram post against Bhagwat, the rapper made some unsubstantiated accusations against the RSS chief and called him the 'face of all problems in India'.

In another post, she made charges against Uttar Pradesh chief minister Adityanath.

Hard Kaur is the second person booked for comments against Adityanath. A couple of weeks back, journalist Prashant Kanojia was arrested for a tweet on Adityanath. Kanojia was later given bail by the Supreme Court.

On Twitter, a section of people seemed to support her right to free speech.

Former actress and self proclaimed ‘yogi’ Payal Rohatgi said Kaur was under the influence of alcohol and these posts were indeed her 'calling out 4 help'.

Another Twitter user points out that while there might be a case for defamation against Kaur, the current charges appear baseless.
