All Congress office-bearers and members of the working committee tendered their resignations on Wednesday to allow new president Mallikarjun Kharge to constitute his own team.
According to the party constitution, Kharge has transformed the Congress Working Committee (CWC) into Steering Committee, retaining all the existing members. The general secretaries and incharge of states will continue to discharge their responsibilities till the new team is announced.
It is not clear whether Kharge will announce his new team now or wait for the Congress plenary where election for 12 CWC members may be held. Elections to Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh, and the ongoing Bharat Jodo Yatra mean the Congress plenary cannot be held before February.
While Kharge has stressed the implementation of Udaipur declaration in letter and spirit, which means induction of younger office-bearers, there is a possibility of many existing general secretaries and in charge of states being dropped.
There is also a possibility of appointment of four Vice Presidents to assist the 80-year-old Kharge who cannot travel across the country very frequently.
