Dalit leader and Gujarat MLA Jignesh Mevani was arrested by the Assam Police from a Circuit House in Gujarat's Palanpur, according to ndtv.com. He was shifted to Ahmedabad from where he will be taken to Assam on Thursday.
The reason behind the arrest is still not known. Mevani, is the convenor of Rashtriya Dalit Adhikar Manch and had given Congress support earlier. According to ndtv.com, some of his recent tweets have been withheld owing to requests from authorities.
His supporters say they haven't got a copy of the FIR or police case yet.
Mevani, an MLA from Gujarat's Vadgam, is a lawyer activist and former journalist.
Mevani along with JNU's former students' union leader Kanhaiya Kumar had been part of a press conference with Congress's Rahul Gandhi where Kumar joined Congress party but Mevani preferred outside support.
