A CRPF jawan was killed and another injured in a militant attack in Srinagar’s city centre on Monday, hours after two non-local labourers were shot at in Pulwama on Sunday.
A police spokesman said militants fired upon two CRPF personnel in Maisuma, resulting in critical injuries to both the personnel.
“The injured personnel were immediately evacuated to nearby hospital where head constable Vishal Kumar succumbed to his injuries,” the spokesman said.
Police sources said the militants came in a bike and the one riding pillion fired indiscriminately at the CRPF personnel outside a camp. The attack triggered chaos as the roads were packed with vehicles and pedestrians. The militants fled taking advantage of the chaos.
Police said the whole area had been cordoned off and a search was under way.
Hours earlier, militants had shot at and injured two labourers from Bihar in Pulwama’s Lajoora.
Police said both received gunshot injuries and were immediately shifted to hospital for treatment where their condition was stated to be stable.
On Sunday evening, militants shot at and injured a truck driver and his helper from Punjab in Nowpora area of Pulwama.
The attacks have triggered fresh panic among the non-locals, who have increasingly been targeted after the 2019 scrapping of special status.
Thousands of additional CRPF men were rushed to the Valley late last year after a spate of militant attacks on non-locals and members of minority communities.
