Copyright suit win for Ilaiyaraaja

Madras High Court has prohibited monetising songs of music composer Ilaiyaraaja through television reality shows, concerts and online radio channels without his permission.

Justice Anita Sumanth passed the order on Tuesday on a 2014civil suit filed by Ilaiyaraaja, alleging copyright infringement by Agi Music, Echo Recording, Giri Trading Company and a few other companies.

The court had earlier passed an interim order in favour of the composer and confirmed it on Tuesday.

Justice Sumanth made it clear that the songs composed by the musician cannot be exploited or used to earn revenue in any manner without his permission. However, films that have songs composed by Ilaiyaraaja and which have been screened in theatres are exempt from the order.
