The Congress on Monday joined the chorus for justice to the women wrestlers who are back on the street protesting against the inaction on charges of sexual exploitation levelled against Wrestling Federation of India chief and BJP Lok Sabha member Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh.

Wrestlers resumed their dharna at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar on Sunday and spent the night on road, making desperate appeals to political parties and citizens of India to support their cause. They insisted that what was happening behind the curtains would be done openly if the guilty was not punished, demanding the registration of an FIR against Singh.

As the Delhi police refused to register an FIR despite several complaints, the wrestlers have now decided to approach the Supreme Court. The matter was mentioned before the Chief Justice of India on Monday.

Congress communication chief Jairam Ramesh tweeted: "Modi ji, break your silence! Sportspersons enhancing the prestige of India in the world are sitting at Jantar Mantar against the crime of sexual harassment. Why is no action taken? Remember, Vinesh Phogat (wrestler of international fame) informed the Prime Minister about sexual exploitation of girls in the federation in October 2021."

Ramesh also retweeted an appeal for help issued by wrestlers Vinesh Phogat, Bajrang Punia and Sakshi Malik.

The All India Mahila Congress on Monday joined the protesting wrestlers. Mahila Congress president Netta D'Souza expressed disappointment with the Prime Minister, arguing that he was asking the nation to support sportspersons and was himself ignoring the sexual crimes against women wrestlers.

Seen wiping the tears of Sakshi Malik at the protest site, she said: “Why is the government protecting the BJP MP instead of punishing him? The Beti Bachao slogan of the BJP sounds hollow when you see sexual predators in the BJP ranks.”
