The Congress on Saturday blasted the Narendra Modi government for creating hype about its programmes for the girl child and doing little else, after the Supreme Court took suo motu notice of the alarming rise in cases of child rape.
Describing the alarming figures as an outcome of the government’s “insensitivity and apathy”, Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala said: “Merely lip service & hype cannot be a substitute for securing women & children.”
“As per the data collated by the Supreme Court, 24,212 FIRs have been registered from January 1, 2019, to June 30, 2019, regarding child rape. Only 911 cases have been disposed of so far, which is merely 4 per cent of the total.”
The Supreme Court on Friday registered a suo motu PIL on the rise in child rape cases and the lack of infrastructure to deal with the menace, apart from the delay in investigations and trial.
The BJP had swept to power in 2014 with this slogan: “Bahut hua naari pe waar/ Abki baar Modi Sarkar.”
