The Congress on Tuesday announced Prasenjit Puitundy and Janab Kamruzzaman Choudhury as its candidates for bypolls to the Asansol Lok Sabha seat and the Ballygunge Assembly segment where bypolls will be held on April 12.

Sources said the Congress leadership had tasked Pradeep Bhattacharya with discussing the issue of fielding a common candidate with the Left Front.

However, since the Left Front had unilaterally announced its candidates — CPM’s Saira Shah Halim and Partha Mukherjee for Ballygunge and Asansol bypolls respectively — there was no scope for alliance.
