The authorities on Thursday began demolishing a seven-star private resort that had been constructed violating the Coastal Regulations Zone (CRZ) Act at a tiny island in the Vembanad Lake here.

The Supreme Court had ordered the demolition of the sprawling Kapico Resort complex with 54 premium villas at Nediyathurut island in January 2020.

The razing began under the supervision of Alappuzha district collector Krishna Theja, sub-collector Suraj Shaji and officials of various departments including revenue and panchayat.

The cost of the demolition procedure is to be borne by the resort owners themselves, official sources said.

Governor unmoved on varsity bill

Kottayam: Kerala governor Arif Mohammed Khan on Thursday said he would not allow the University Laws Amendment Bill recently passed by the Assembly.

Insisting that he cannot be used as a rubber stamp, Khan indicated he was also against the Lok Ayukta Amendment Bill passed by the Assembly recently, saying no one can be a judge in his own cause.

“I cannot allow a mechanism to be adopted whereby it can be used to appoint unqualified and underqualified relatives of those in power and relatives of the personal staff of the chief minister and other ministers on the rolls of the universities,” Khan said about the University Laws Bill.
