Delhi authorities may soon take measures to free Shaheen Bagh of protesters of the new citizenship law.
The protesters, who number in hundreds and include mostly women from Muslim families, have made the stretch on Road 13A leading to Noida via Kalindi Kunj a site of now-historic protests.
Delhi police on Friday appealed again to the protesters to clear the stretch for the benefit of commuters who have been facing a tough time for the past month.
“We appeal to agitators at Road No. 13 A Shaheen Bagh to understand the sufferings that the complete highway blockade is causing to residents of Delhi & NCR, Senior Citizens, emergency patients and school going children,” the police tweeted on Friday.
“We again urge protesters to cooperate & clear the road in larger public interest,” the force said.
Curiously, a large section of the road from Jasola to Okhla Bird Sanctuary has been blocked by the police. The 2.5-km stretch has been closed for traffic with barricades on either side since December 15, when police action was ordered against students on the Jamia Millia Islamia campus.
The Shaheen Bagh protest, on the other hand, is spread out over a stretch of about 150m.
The police request to vacate the protest site came after a high court order which asked it to look into the matter.
Delhi Lt Gov. Anil Baijal on January 10 had empowered the police to detain people under the National Security Act (NSA) for three months starting from January 19.
Delhi is slated to vote on February 8, while the budget session of Parliament is to begin from January 31.
