Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi, who dismissed two court masters on suspicion that they tampered with a judicial order on Anil Ambani, has ordered an inquiry to find out whether it was indicative of a deeper malaise, sources said.

Justice Gogoi has asked the secretary-general of the Supreme Court to identify areas vulnerable to possible mischief, the sources added.

Justice Gogoi had convened a meeting of the Supreme Court secretary-general, Sanjeev Kalgaonkar, and seven senior registrars at his official residence to take stock against the backdrop of the alleged attempt to tamper with the order that required the personal appearance of Ambani in a contempt case.

The CJI is understood to have expressed strong displeasure at the manner in which the two officers, who are now dismissed, “played with the Supreme Court”.

Justice Gogoi has sought a plan within a week to identify if more people are involved in such activities, a source said.
