Tussar silk is quite a popular variety of silk and is also known as wild silk. There is no shortage of people who like wearing clothes made of Tussar silk. Silk clothes are mostly worn on special occasions, and women of all age groups love wearing silk sarees. The rich texture and vibrant, deep colour of Tussar silk are some of the reasons for its popularity.

The women of self-help groups conduct silk ginning in various RIPA centres in Chhattisgarh. This livelihood-generating activity is improving the lives of women. 15 women of the Nari Shakti Tussar Silk Matka Spinner self-help group of village Baghera in Rajnandgaon district started silk threading in January 2023. Earlier, these women were engaged in farming, labour, and household work. Living with their families, they were leading lives with limited means. After joining the group, the women produced silk thread worth Rs 4,50,000, which earned them a net profit of Rs 1,40,000.

Similarly, 20 women from the Silk Thread Committee of Tumenar village in Bastar district are engaged in silk threading work under the RIPA scheme. Thread worth Rs. 6 lahks was produced by the women of the group, earning them a net profit of Rs. 1,80,000.

The state government aims to enable women to produce and market silk thread through RIPA centres. Furthermore, the venture aims to facilitate the generation of sustainable employment in rural areas to reduce poverty and empower the rural population, especially women, through a plethora of self-employment opportunities.
