Chhattisgarh has bagged an award from the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare's National Consultation on Comprehensive Abortion Care, New Delhi for Innovation in secure abortion services.
For the advancement and tracking of safe abortion services, the E- Kalyani app was designed in compliance with the MTP Act (Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act) and with reference to private hospitals. State Nodal Officer for Maternal Health, Dr Shailendra Agrawal, and State Advisor, Abhilasha Sharma Ratre, received the award on behalf of the state.
According to the Medical Termination of Pregnancy (Amendment) Act, 2021, a pregnant woman can get an abortion up to 24 weeks. Abortion is permitted in case of sexual assault, rape, change of marital status (widow and divorce) during minor pregnancy, physically disabled and mentally ill women.
Also, those women who have some abnormalities in the foetus growing in their womb can also get an abortion. MTP Act has been enacted to oversee safe abortion services and through the E-Kalyani app monitoring of the availability of safe abortion services in private hospitals can be done. Through this app, private hospitals can apply for providing services under the Act, which is reviewed and approved by the District Level Committee.
Along with providing safe abortion-related services to 193 government hospitals, the state's 136 private hospitals are also registered in the E-Kalyani app. Additionally, the Ipas Development Foundation also cooperates in the operation of safe abortion services in the state.
