The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) has formally taken over the security of the Parliament complex ahead of the budget session starting next week, sources in the Union home ministry said.

“A contingent of 140 CISF personnel has now been deployed at the Parliament complex as part of the new measure to frisk the visitors and their belongings from the budget session that begins from January 31,” a ministry official said.

Last month, the home ministry had handed over “comprehensive” security of the Parliament building complex to the CISF after a preliminary probe revealed lapses on the part of Delhi police leading to the huge security breach when two men stormed into the Lok Sabha visitors’ gallery using passes issued by BJP MP Prathap Simha and sprayed yellow smoke from canisters.

The initial probe had revealed lapses on the part of the Delhi police as the canisters slipped past the police’s physical check. The canisters were hidden in cavities cut into custom-made shoes.

Earlier, it was the Delhi police’s responsibility to frisk visitors to the Parliament complex.
