Central government Officer, engineer arrested for indulging in corruption

CBI arrests Santosh Kumar Panigrahy, an assistant audit officer, for allegedly taking a bribe of Rs 6,500 to clear a medical bill

One central government officer and another state government engineer were arrested by the respective investigating agencies of the Centre and the state for indulging in corruption.

While an assistant audit officer posted at the Principal Accountant General (AG) office was allegedly arrested for taking a bribe of Rs 6500 by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Odisha vigilance arrested an engineer for accumulating huge properties disproportionate to his known sources of income.

The CBI arrested Santosh Kumar Panigrahy, an assistant audit officer for allegedly taking a bribe of Rs 6,500 to clear a medical bill. He was taking the money from the complainant to clear his medical bill without raising any audit objection.

He was arrested while taking the bribe near a place at the RTO office from the complainant. He assured the complainant that he would not raise any objection to his medical bill.

Following his arrest, the CBI conducted raids at his house in Bhubaneswar and Visakhapatnam.

In another case of corruption, Odisha vigilance on Friday arrested an assistant engineer of the rural works department for amassing huge properties disproportionate to his known source of income. The vigilance has seized properties worth Rs 1 crore, including 21 plots, Rs 5.45 lakh cash.

The engineer has been identified as Arjun Kumar Sahoo and is currently posted at Salipur in Cuttack district.

A fire broke out at 6.30 pm on Friday at an abandoned bus terminal in Koraput’s Jeypore town, causing damage to a few buses parked for years, police said, reports PTI.

Nobody was injured in the blaze, they said.
