The CBI has taken over the probe into the Manipur incident where two Kuki women were paraded naked and sexually assaulted on May 4, officials said.
“The agency has taken over the FIR registered by the Manipur police in the case. A special investigation team has been stationed in the northeastern state under a DIG-rank officer,” said a CBI officer.
More women officers, he said, besides forensic experts, will soon be dispatched to probe the case.
The 26-second video of the horrific incident went viral on social media soon after it surfaced on July 19, triggering nationwide condemnation.
On July 20 the Supreme Court had on its own taken cognisance of the video and said it was “deeply disturbed”.
The bench headed by Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud had directed the Centre and the Manipur government to take immediate remedial, rehabilitative and preventive steps and apprise it of the action taken.
Sources said seven people had been arrested in connection with the video, including four on July 20.
On Thursday, the Centre in an affidavit to the apex court pleaded that the entire case, including the trial of the offence, be shifted out of Manipur.
Questions have been raised on the delay in acting against the accused persons.
The incident took place on May 4, a day after the clashes between the Meitei and Kuki communities started.
