The CBI on Saturday filed a chargesheet against Congress leader Jagdish Tytler in connection with the anti-Sikh pogrom that followed the assassination of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on October 31, 1984.

The agency has alleged that Tytler "incited, instigated and provoked" a mob that killed three Sikhs in Delhi's Pul Bangash area on November 1, 1984.

Tytler, who was an MP at the time of the violence, has been charged with rioting and murder, sources said. The trial court is expected to take cognisance of the chargesheet on June 2.

Tytler had in the past dismissed the allegations.

The CBI had registered the case on November 22, 2005. The case relates to a mob torching the Gurdwara Pul Bangash at Azad Market, Delhi, on November 1, 1984, and killing Sardar Thakur Singh, Badal Singh and Gurcharan Singh, the agency said in a statement.

It added that the Union home ministry had asked the agency to investigate Tytler and others after going through the report of the Justice Nanavati Commission, set up by the Centre in the year 2000 to probe the 1984 anti-Sikh violence in Delhi.

"During CBI investigation, evidences (sic) came on record that on November 1, 1984, the said accused allegedly instigated, incited and provoked the mob assembled at Gurudwara Pul Bangash at Azad Market, Delhi which resulted in burning of Gurudwara Pul Bangash and killing of three Sikh persons by the mob, apart from burning and looting of shops," the CBI statement said.
