The Catholic Church in India on Saturday congratulated Prime Minister-elect Narendra Modi and BJP president Amit Shah on their party’s victory in the Lok Sabha polls.
Catholic Bishops Conference of India president Bishop Oswald Gracias said in a letter to Modi: “I want to assure you of our prayers and best wishes for you and your team as you lead our country in building a strong and inclusive India. At a public function yesterday we prayed that God give you health, wisdom and strength to carry out the great responsibilities entrusted to you.”
He added: “We are all eager to work together for the vision of a New India which your Excellency has spoken about — a New India which gives hope and energy to our youth, empowers our women… sustainable opportunities for our farmers and strengthens our economy while leaving no one behind….”
For the Quit India Movement’s platinum jubilee in 2017, Modi had launched the New India pledge to “free India from poverty, dirt, corruption, terrorism, casteism and communalism” by 2022.
