A young man and a teenaged boy were killed and a woman was injured on Wednesday after they were hit by an SUV that was allegedly part of the motorcade of Karan Bhushan Singh, the BJP candidate from Kaiserganj in Uttar Pradesh, police said.
Karan Singh is the son of the controversial Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, who is the Kaiserganj MP, the former Wrestling Federation of India chief and has been charged with serial sexual harassment of women wrestlers.
Additional Superintendent of Police Radhey Shyam Rai toll PTI that the accused driver, Lavkush Srivastav, 30, has been taken into custody.
Kernalganj, UP SHO Nirbhay Narayan Singh told PTI that Rehan Khan, 17, and Shehzad Khan, 20, who were riding on a motorcycle, were hit by the vehicle near a school.
Both died on the spot.
The SUV that hit the duo lost control and also hit Sita Devi, 60, who was walking by the side of the road, the SHO said.
According to the police, the local residents have alleged that the SUV involved in the accident was part of the cavalcade of Karan Singh.
"They have also alleged that the occupants of the SUV abandoned the damaged car and fled in another vehicle," Kernalganj SHO Singh told PTI.
A source in the UP police claimed Karan was in the car but was not driving it, and that the accident happened at a place called Colonelganj, around 90 km east of Lucknow.
Enraged over the incident, the locals along with the family members of the victims blocked the road and demanded the arrest of those involved in the accident.
Senior police officials pacified the protesters and assured them of swift action in the case.
“The bodies have been sent for post-mortem. We are in the process of lodging an FIR against the driver of the SUV," the SHO said.
Opposition leaders were quick to pounce on the incident and draw parallels with Lakhimpur Kheri in 2021, where a BJP leader’s son was accused of mowing down four people during a farmers’ protest.
