Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau — who was stranded in India for two days after his official aircraft developed a technical snag — left New Delhi on Tuesday afternoon amid intense trolling across social media platforms from his opponents in India and back home.

Trudeau flew out of New Delhi after the substitute aircraft that was flying in to pick him up got diverted in Europe, delaying its arrival and potentially creating a situation where he may have had to stay an extra night in the city. Thereafter, his administration let it be known that the aircraft that had ferried him into India had been repaired and he flew out with an official farewell in the afternoon.

For Trudeau, his second visit to India was quite similar to the one in 2018 when, too, the substantial part got eclipsed by Canada’s reluctance to deal with Khalistani elements, primarily because of sympathisers within his coalition partners which are propping up his government.

This time, too, India is understood to have given him an earful, going by the external affairs ministry readout on his meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the sidelines of the G20 summit on Sunday. It was uncharacteristically sharp and revealed India’s exasperation with Canada.

According to the ministry, the Prime Minister "conveyed our strong concerns about continuing anti-India activities of extremist elements in Canada".
