The Congress has called for a special session of Parliament to discuss problems faced by farmers.
Kisan Khet-Mazdoor Congress chief Nana Patole wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan, requesting them to convene a special session of Parliament to discuss issues related to farmers.
If a special session can be convened to pass the Goods and Services Tax, why can’t one be called to discuss farmers’ problems, Patole asked.
The Congress knows the government will not pay any heed to its demand but the refusal to call a special session will give Opposition parties a talking point.
The Congress has been saying that farmers are not getting the MSP (minimum support price) announced by the government for most commodities. It organised a Parliament gherao on farmers’ issues last week.
