Shots were fired on AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi’s car when his convoy stopped at an Uttar Pradesh toll plaza on Thursday.

No one was injured. The Hyderabad MP, returning to Delhi after campaigning in Meerut, continued his journey in another car.

Police said CCTV footage showed two assailants. One was arrested immediately at the Chhajarsi toll gate, Hapur district. Five teams are searching for the other.

Owaisi’s associates said several doors of the SUV showed bullet holes and the front right tire too had been punctured by a bullet.

At 6pm, Owaisi tweeted his car had faced “four rounds” of fire “a few moments ago” from “3-4 people” who ran away leaving their weapons. He later told reporters in Delhi: “Two attackers, one in a red jacket and the other in a white jacket, were very close to my car.”

Asked if he suspected anyone, Owaisi said he had “no idea” but “objectionable words” had been used against him at a Dharma Sansad of sadhus in Allahabad last week.

He said he wanted an independent probe by the Election Commission. and would lodge a complaint with the Lok Sabha Speaker. The police refused to name the accused or speculate on the motive.
