The BJP on Monday accused the Congress of colluding with anti-national forces and trying to usher “economic anarchy” in India, dubbing the Hindenburg report as the latest example of foreign interference aimed at creating “disturbance and destabilisation” in the country.

The latest report by the US-based short-seller has accused Sebi chairman Madhabi Puri-Buch of serious irregularities in connection with the Adani fiasco.

During a media address, BJP spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad claimed that the report was deliberately released over the weekend to destabilise the capital markets on Monday. “After being rebuffed by the people of India, the Congress, its allies and the toolkit gang have conspired together to usher in economic anarchy and instability in India,” Prasad said.

He accused the Congress of striving to project Indian markets as unsafe at a time the country was being globally seen as “safe, stable and promising”.

Prasad said that billionaire investor George Soros, known for running a “propaganda against Prime Minister Narendra Modi”, had invested in the Hindenburg firm.

“In their pathological hatred against Modi, the Congress led by Rahul Gandhi and his friends have developed a hatred against India itself,” he said. “The Congress wants the stock market, which has given good returns to millions of small investors, to crash.”

Asked about the Opposition’s demand for a joint parliamentary committee (JPC) probe into the latest Hindenburg allegations, Prasad rejected it, saying it was aimed at weakening the Indian economy and destroying the investment climate in the country.

He termed the Hindenburg report as “fictitious” and said the firm never replied to the Sebi notice as part of a probe ordered by the Supreme Court and has instead launched a counter-attack against the market regulator.

The Congress has demanded the Sebi chairman’s resignation and urged the Supreme Court to transfer the Adani probe to the CBI or a special investigation team given the “likelihood of Sebi’s compromise”.
