The BJP on Monday sought to play up Donald Trump’s visit as a big achievement for the country on the world stage, with party managers asserting that such events drove Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s popularity as a strong leader.

The party went all out on Twitter, highlighting Trump’s speech at Ahmedabad where the US President described America as a “faithful and loyal” friend of India and lavished praise on Modi.

“The common people feel that under Modi, India is respected and taken note of by all the world powers,” a BJP leader said, emphasising the political importance of Trump’s visit.

The party’s put out a series of tweets. “I express my profound gratitude to an exceptional leader, a man who works night and day for his country and a man I’m proud to call my friend, PM Modi. America loves & respects India and will always be faithful and loyal friends to Indian people: President Trump #NamasteTrump,” one tweet posted on the party’s Twitter handle @BJP4India said.

Union ministers tweeted the achievements of the Modi government that Trump hailed. “Under PM @NarendraModi, for the first time in history, every village in India now has access to electricity: President @RealDonaldTrump at #NamasteTrump event in Ahmedabad,” railway minister Piyush Goyal tweeted.

Ravi Shankar Prasad, minister for information technology, tweeted: “From 2016 to 2018, the Job creation in the US by the Indian IT companies have grown to 3.8 percent which is much faster than 2.6 percent of avg. annual employment growth in IT industry. #TrumpInIndia.”
