The BJP on Friday launched a frontal attack on billionaire investor George Soros over his comments on PM Modi and Adani and accused him of not only targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi but also the Indian democratic system, as per PTI.
"This war is being mounted against India and what stands between the war and India's interests is Modi," BJP leader and Union minister Smriti Irani told reporters.
"Everyone should condemn his remarks in one voice," Irani said. She also alleged that Soros wanted to destroy Indian democracy and wanted some "hand-picked" people to run the government here.
Billionaire George Soros sparked a fresh controversy surrounding PM Modi and Adani-Hindenburg row after predicting that the recent stock rout faced by the conglomerate will instigate a “democratic revival” in India.
He remarked that the turmoil engulfing Gautam Adani's business empire has shaken the faith in India as an investment opportunity. Speaking ahead of the Munich Security Conference, the 92-year-old said, “Modi and business tycoon Adani are close allies. Their fate is intertwined,” as reported by Bloomberg television.
Referring to the recent failed attempt by Adani Enterprises to raise funds, Soros remarked the stock crash as a “house of cards”. He said, “Modi is silent on the subject but he will have to answer questions from foreign investors and in Parliament.”
Union minister Irani countered by saying that Soros is an “economic war criminal” who has created a fund of over USD one billion to intervene in democratic systems, including in India, she claimed.
"The man who broke the Bank of England, and is designated by the nation an economic war criminal, has now pronounced his desire to break Indian democracy. George Soros, an international entrepreneur, has declared his ill-intention to intervene in democratic processes of India," the fiery BJP leader said, according to ndtv.com.
