The Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) arrested a Chinese national carrying an Indian passport in Kishanganj district of Bihar on Friday.

A senior SSB officer said that the arrested person had crossed through the Indo-Nepal border, which is an open border, and was apprehended near Thakurganj in the district.

“His activities generated suspicion and our personnel stopped him. He was carrying an Indian passport in the name of one Gombo Tamang, a resident of Darjeeling. When questioned, he failed to give satisfactory replies and offered Rs 50,000 as a bribe to one of our officers. He was promptly arrested,” the senior SSB officer said on the condition of anonymity.

The SSB officials contacted their Bengal police counterparts in Darjeeling and requested to verify the details of the arrested person. They turned out to be incorrect.

“We questioned him and he accepted that he is a Chinese national. He could be a spy,” the SSB officer added.

The name of the arrested person is yet to be ascertained. The SSB has handed him over to Khoribari police station in Siliguri in Bengal as the area where he was arrested comes under SSB’s Siliguri Frontier formation.

Meanwhile, SSB Patna Frontier inspector-general Pankaj Darad said that a Bangladeshi national was arrested at Raxaul in East Champaran district along the Indo-Nepal border on Friday. He is being questioned for further details.

Previously, two Chinese nationals were arrested at Raxaul in July this year for entering India without valid papers.
