A Bihar police sub-inspector was run over and killed while a home guard jawan was seriously injured allegedly by the liquor mafia in Begusarai district during the early hours of Wednesday.
The deceased police officer Khamas Chaudhary, 52, was a resident of Madhubani district.
The Navkothi station house officer (SHO) had sent Chaudhary and three home guard jawans to intercept a car after receiving intelligence inputs that it was transporting liquor.
Chaudhary and the three home guard jawans rushed on a police patrol vehicle and positioned themselves in the middle of a bridge on the Budhi Gandak river at Chhatauna and waited for the car around 12:30am. A few minutes later, the car arrived at the bridge.
“However, the car driver accelerated after seeing the police vehicle and rammed into Chaudhary, who fell from the bridge. His head dashed on stones under the bridge and he died on the spot. A home guard jawan was also injured in the incident and is now being treated at the district hospital,” Begusarai superintendent of police Yogendra Kumar said.
“The car has been seized and its owner Rupesh Kumar has been arrested. The police team is questioning him. His friend was driving the vehicle and we are making efforts to nab him,” Yogendra said.
No liquor was recovered from the seized vehicle.
