Two police officers allegedly thrashed an additional district judge at gunpoint in Madhubani district of Bihar on Thursday.

Judge Avinash Kumar of the Jhanjharpur sub-divisional court was beaten up in the afternoon after he issued summons to Ghoghardiha station house officer Gopal Krishna Yadav. Jhanjharpur is around 185km from Patna.

Yadav, along with sub-inspector Abhimanyu Kumar Singh and other police personnel, allegedly barged into Kumar’s chamber and questioned his audacity to issue the summons.

They also charged him with troubling the Madhubani superintendent of police in various cases.

The SHO then allegedly pointed his pistol at the ADJ and, along with Singh, assaulted him. The ensuing shouts and screams drew the attention of lawyers and court employees who rushed to the judge’s chamber.

The angry police officers started assaulting the lawyers and court staff but were soon overpowered. An employee attached to Kumar managed to snatch the gun of the SHO, sources said.

The two police officers have been arrested.

Patna High Court took suo motu cognisance of the incident and asked Bihar director-general of police S.K. Singhal to be present in court on November 29.

Madhubani district magistrate Amit Kumar and superintendent of police Satya Prakash did not take calls from this newspaper.

A couple of months ago, Judge Kumar had suggested that the Madhubani SP be sent for training in law and the use of proper sections in criminal cases.
