“They were involved in killing one of our personnel and were residents of Gaya district.

“We do not know about their motive. A probe is going on,” Vaishali Sadar sub-divisional police officer (SDPO) Om Prakash told reporters.

Prakash refrained from divulging further details and said that he would share them later.

According to police sources, the two persons killed in the purported encounter
near a highway under the Sarai police station on Monday afternoon have been identified as Satyaprakash alias Upendra Kumar and Bittu Kumar.

Their bodies have been sent to the district hospital for post-mortem.

Earlier in the day, a police team led by assistant sub-inspector Sanjay Kumar was checking vehicles at a checkpost near a UCO Bank branch at Surat Chowk under Sarai police station.

The police stopped three persons coming on a motorcycle at which they tried to flee on foot from the spot.

The police personnel gave them a chase when one of them fired several bullets of which four hit constable Amita Bachchan Kumar.

The constable slumped on the ground and the other police personnel rushed him to a nearby private hospital where he was declared dead.

The local people also gave a chase to the fleeing miscreants and managed to nab two of them.

They handed them over to the police, only to be killed in an “encounter”.

The slain constable hailed from Munger district and had joined the police force in 2015. He was known for his dedication to work.

He leaves behind a wife and two children.
