At least three security personnel on poll duty in Rohtas district of Bihar succumbs to heat stroke

At least three security personnel on poll duty in Rohtas district of Bihar, including two from Nagaland, succumbed to severe heat stroke in the past 24 hours.

These deaths took the total toll because of heatwave in the state to at least 19 in the past four days. Fifteen of them were on election duty.

Soldier Pitlohi Losho, hailing from Phek district of Nagaland, died on Saturday while lieutenant havildar A. Nikiye of Dimapur, Nagaland, passed away on Friday at Dehri under the Karakat Lok Sabha seat. Both of them were from the India Reserve Battalion.

Home guard Subhash Prasad Singh of Munger, who was deployed for election duty at the Sasaram Lok Sabha seat, also died of heat stroke on Friday.

Earlier on Tuesday, assistant sub-inspector Devnath Ram — a native of Bhojpur — and home guard Mohammad Samiullah of East Champaran died of heat stroke, Rohtas police said. They were deployed for election duty in Sasaram.

However, there was no clarity on the number of deceased in the seventh and last phase of the elections as well as the total deaths of polling and security personnel during the Lok Sabha elections in Bihar.

“We are yet to get the figures of the death (of polling and security personnel) for the seventh phase of elections,” Bihar chief electoral officer H.R. Srinivas told The Telegraph.
