Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar on Saturday questioned the need for a new Parliament building and warned against an attempt to change the history of the country.

"What was the need to construct a separate Parliament building? I had seen it during my Delhi visit. I had not felt good about it even when there were talks about constructing the building,” Nitish said.

Asserting that the Parliament building was part of our history, Nitish said: "The building that was there at the time of Independence should have been developed further. Will you change our history? This is not good.”

The chief minister was interacting with reporters on the sidelines of a state function in Patna to observe the death anniversary of the first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. Bihar governor Rajendra Arlekar, deputy chief minister Tejashwi Prasad Yadav and other ministers were also present.

Pointing out that several other parties were not attending the opening of the new Parliament building because the President was not inaugurating it, Nitish revealed that he and his party were abstaining because the new building was not needed and for the sake of history.

"Will you forget the history? Who will know about the old building if you destroy it tomorrow? I am continuously saying that the people who are ruling the country these days will change the entire history. They will change the entire history of our freedom struggle,” Nitish added.

Arguing that he took care of everything connected to the history of the country and believed in its importance, Nitish said it was the reason he was observing Nehru's death anniversary irrespective of the fact that he had participated in the political movement launched by Loknayak Jayaprakash Narayan.

“I will ask the people to understand what is happening. Was there a need for the new Parliament building? No such need was felt while the country was being ruled earlier. These people are aiming at changing the entire history,” Nitish said.

The chief minister also expressed dismay over President Droupadi Murmu not being invited to the inauguration of the new Parliament building. Nitish's Janata Dal United will observe a fast on Sunday to protest the inauguration of the building by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The chief minister lambasted the BJP for asserting that he had not invited the governor to inaugurate the extension building of the Bihar Legislative Assembly.

“The BJP was with us at that time. It forgot that only the existing building was expanded. No new Assembly has been constructed,” Nitish said.
