"This responsibility comes at a critical time when governance in Delhi has completely failed under AAP," Gupta said and demanded that an assembly session be convened.

A meeting of the legislative party at the state BJP office elected Gupta as the new leader of opposition, the party said in a statement.

All seven BJP MLAs, Delhi BJP co-incharge Alka Gurjar, president Virendra Sachdeva and general secretary (organisation) Pawan Rana were present in the meeting.

Gupta's name was proposed by the party's chief whip in the assembly Ajay Mahawar. His election was unanimous, the statement said and added that his name for the post was declared by the Delhi BJP president.

Gupta held the post of leader of opposition from 2015 to 2020.

He will have a short tenure of a few months as assembly polls in Delhi are due early next year.

Gupta expressed his gratitude to the party leadership for giving him the opportunity to serve as the leader of opposition.

"The people of Delhi feel betrayed and see the BJP, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, as the only party capable of providing pro-people and clean governance," he said.

Gupta added that the BJP MLAs were committed to exposing the "failures" of the AAP government at all levels and voicing the people's concerns on the floor of the House.
