Hundreds of people turned up to attend the all-faith prayer meet for train accident victims organised at Bahanaga in Odisha’s Balasore district on Monday.

While the people of Bahanaga continued to mourn the death of 275 people in the triple-train crash on June 2, 12 political parties on Monday held a demonstration in front of the headquarters of East Coast Railway in Bhubaneswar demanding a probe by SIT (Special Investigating Team) monitored by the Supreme Court. Similar demonstrations were organised by the political parties at Berhampur, Rourkela and Sambalpur too. The Biju Janata Dal (BJD) was not among the 12 parties that held the demonstrations.

At Bahanaga, Sarva Dharma Parthana Sabha (all-faith prayer meet), Biswa Shanti Maha Yagna (havan for the world) and Veda chanting were held. Odisha energy minister Pratap Keshari Deb also attended the meeting.

Convener of the organising committee, Sarat Raj, said: “As a part of the three-day memorial tribute, all the programmes were organised. Passengers from all faiths were killed in the incident. So people from all religions and faiths joined the programme. The programme will continue till Tuesday.”

Besides demanding an SIT probe into the mishap, the political parties also demanded the resignation of the Union railway minister Ashwini Vaishnaw.
