Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday invoked the demolition of the Berlin Wall, linking the 30-year-old event with the Supreme Court’s Ayodhya verdict to say that both heralded peace and unity.

“Today is November 9. On this day the Berlin Wall had fallen. Two different streams had come together and taken the pledge to make a new beginning,” Modi said in his address to the nation in the evening over the court’s judgment.

Saturday marks the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, which had physically and ideologically divided East and West Germany for 28 years.

Modi also referred to Saturday’s inauguration of the Kartarpur Corridor, the cross-border passage to the shrine that marks the final resting place of Guru Nanak in Pakistan. “Today, Kartarpur Corridor has started with the cooperation of India and Pakistan. Today, with Ayodhya verdict, this date of November 9, teaches us to come together and move forward,” he said.

“Today’s message is to unite, be united and to live together. If there is any bitterness, hatred in anyone’s mind, it is time to leave them behind.”

The Prime Minister said the people’s acceptance of the “unanimous” verdict was a reflection of India’s “tolerant nature” and faith in the judiciary and the Constitution. “The world has seen today how robust and strong our democracy is. Today’s events will be recorded in history,” he said. “After the verdict, the way every section of society, of every faith, has welcomed it is proof of India’s ancient culture and tradition of social harmony.”

Modi, who addressed the nation after inaugurating the Kartarpur Corridor earlier in the day, stressed his government’s slogan of “sabka saath, sabka vikas and sabka vishwas”. “After this verdict we have to resolve that the new generation will get to build a New India. Come, let’s make a new beginning. Let’s build a New India,” Modi said.

Earlier, the Prime Minister had taken to Twitter, to laud the verdict.

“The Honourable Supreme Court has given its verdict on the Ayodhya issue. This verdict shouldn’t be seen as a win or loss for anybody. Be it Ram Bhakti or Rahim Bhakti, it is imperative that we strengthen the spirit of Rashtra Bhakti. May peace and harmony prevail!” he said in a tweet.
