Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh and Union Home Minister Amit Shah met on Thursday to find a solution regarding the situation at Delhi, where farmers have been protesting since last week. In the meeting, Singh urged Shah as well as the farmers to find an early resolution to the stir over the new farm laws, saying that the protests are affecting Punjab’s economy and the security of the nation.

After meeting Shah at his residence, the chief minister said that a common ground must be found at the earliest and both the parties should not hold a rigid position about their requirements.

“I came to meet the Home Minister to reiterate our position and to make a request to him and the farmers to resolve this soon because this (agitation) affects the economy of my Punjab as well as the security of the nation,” Singh told reporters after the meeting.

He said he appealed to the home minister to find an early solution to the problem.

Asked if he was trying to mediate between the agitating farmers and the central government, Singh said a discussion is going on between the two sides.

“It is for them to resolve... we have reiterated Punjab's position,” the Congress leader said.

According to sources, the meeting was held parallely with the interaction between the protesting farmers and the government at the Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi.

The meeting started around noon, after it got delayed by over two hours, sources said.

The Punjab chief minister and his Congress party have been supporting the farmers' stir and the state Assembly has also passed a set of bills aimed at negating the Centre's farm legislation.

Singh had earlier said that he and his government were willing to mediate in the talks between the Centre and the farmers in the collective interest of all.
