AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal on Wednesday claimed that he was probably sent to jail for resisting the Adani group’s planned entry into the capital’s power sector.
Speaking in the Delhi Assembly, Kejriwal cited the US allegations of bribery against industrialist Gautam Adani and two executives of his company to win “lucrative solar energy supply contracts”.
He also blamed Adani for charging Gujarat four times what it used to pay earlier for electricity.
“I want to reveal with full responsibility that when I was chief minister, there was pressure on me to give Delhi’s electricity companies to Adani…. Electricity in Delhi would have become so expensive that neither would we have been able to give subsidies nor would you have been able to afford to pay your bills. When I refused to give Delhi’s electricity to Adani, I was thinking today that maybe the reason for sending me to jail was because they had got angry,” Kejriwal said.
He did not substantiate his allegations against Adani or specify who pressured him.
The former Delhi chief minister was in jail in connection with an alleged liquor policy scam earlier this year.
“I challenge the BJP to declare before the elections that they won’t hand over Delhi’s electricity companies to Adani if they come to power. Even by fluke, if their government is formed, if the people of Delhi vote for the BJP, they will give Delhi’s electricity companies to Adani in the first cabinet meeting,” he added.
In 2002, Delhi’s electricity board was split into several companies, including three new distribution firms, which were partially privatised by the Congress government. Anil Ambani’s Reliance has a 51 per cent stake in two firms and the Tatas have a 51 per cent stake in one. The rest of the stake in the three firms is held by a holding company of the Delhi government.
