Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal and several senior leaders of his Aam Aadmi Party were acquitted on Saturday in a case of demonstration outside Parliament in 2014.

Kejriwal had demanded that powers over the police be transferred to the territorial government from the Centre — a demand his party has pressed for in its larger struggle for statehood.

Kejriwal, who had become chief minister with the support of the Congress the previous month, went on dharna for 30 hours after police refused to assist a vigilante raid by AAP cadre on Africans in a South Delhi village suspected of human and narcotics trafficking. None of the charges of trafficking against the African women — who had accused the vigilantes of molestation — were proved.

The stir finally ended after the officer, who had refused to cooperate with Delhi law minister Somnath Bharti in the “raid”, and another officer accused of not properly responding to the call of a Danish gang-rape victim, were transferred.

“Some people say that I am an anarchist… I agree that I am an anarchist. Today, I will create anarchy for Mr Shinde (then Union home minister),” Kejriwal had said.

He had later resigned as chief minister after the Congress refused to support his stringent ombudsman bill, and returned to power in 2015, winning 67 of the 70 seats in the Assembly. Delhi goes to the polls again, soon.

News agency ANI reported that a Delhi court said on Saturday that the case against Kejriwal and the others was being set aside.

The others facing trial included deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia and deputy Speaker Rakhi Birla. MP Sanjay Singh and former AAP spokesman Ashutosh had been acquitted earlier.
