Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal returned to Tihar jail after the bail term granted by the Supreme Court for the Lok Sabha election campaigning expired on Sunday.

Party sources said that before returning to prison, the AAP national convener put in place a secondary leadership to manage the party which does not include any political role for his wife Sunita, who had extensively campaigned for the party in his absence.

Before surrendering at Tihar in the evening, Kejriwal visited the Mahatma Gandhi memorial at Rajghat, the Hanuman temple in Connaught Place and his party office on Rouse Avenue, where he addressed AAP supporters.

The BJP protested against the CM’s visit to Rajghat, calling it a "misuse of the Father of the Nation to cover his alleged economic offences".

Kejriwal told his supporters: "Bhagat Singh had said that when power becomes dictatorship then jail becomes a responsibility. It is everyone’s responsibility to go to jail and raise their voice against it. We are disciples of Bhagat Singh, who went to jail to save the country, to free the country.

"This time when I am going (to jail), I don’t know when I will return. I don’t know what they will do to me in jail. But I don’t care, they can do whatever they want. If Bhagat Singh was hanged, I am also ready to be hanged."

Kejriwal also allocated responsibilities to leaders in a meeting of the party’s political affairs committee.

An AAP source said: "Sunitaji will have no political role. Sandeep Pathak (national general secretary, organisation) will run the party with assistance from other leaders, including (Delhi MLAs) Durgesh Pathak, Sanjeev Jha, Dilip Pandey and Saurabh Bharadwaj. (Minister) Atishi will handle the Delhi government. (MP) Sanjay Singh has not been given any administrative responsibility."

Kejriwal, who was denied a bail extension sought on medical grounds, said: "Many people are saying various things. One thing is that they (BJP) have committed a scam of (electronic voting) machines, but I have told this to Sandeep Pathak also and I want to tell the same thing to all the parties of the INDIA bloc to tell their counting agents to be fully alert.

"Till the end, even if you are losing, do not get up and leave. Many times, what happens is that after the first-second rounds of counting, when there is a feeling of defeat, people get up in despair and leave. Do not get up and leave," he said.

Several AAP leaders, including Punjab chief minister Bhagwant Mann, accompanied Kejriwal to Tihar.
