An army jawan wanted in connection with a police officer's death in mob violence in Bulandshahr has been arrested, a senior official of the Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force said on Sunday.
'The army handed over Jitendra Malik to UP STF team in Meerut yesterday late night,' STF inspector-general Amitabh Yash said.
Asked whether this would be considered as a handing over by the army or an arrest by the STF, Yash said, 'Technically it will be considered an arrest. In the videos available he is present at the site of violence.' Malik was in police custody in Meerut, Yash said.
On Monday, a mob went on a rampage in Bulandshahr district after cow carcasses were allegedly found in a field.
During the violence, inspector Subodh Kumar Singh and a 20-year-old youth died of gunshot wounds. Inspector Singh was one of the initial investigators in the case of alleged lynching of Mohammad Akhlaque.
Nine people have been arrested in connection with Monday's violence.
Army chief Gen Bipin Rawat said on Saturday that full cooperation will be extended in the investigation of the incident.
On Saturday, police had said that Malik left for his 22 Rashtriya Rifles unit in Sopore after the violence.
Officials in Srinagar said he had been detained by his unit after the Uttar Pradesh police approached the army’s Udhampur-based Northern Command headquarters for his custody.
