Union home minister Amit Shah’s scheduled visit to Arunachal Pradesh on Sunday has been cancelled in the wake of the protests in Assam and some other parts of the Northeast over the passage of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, sources in the ministry said.

“Shah’s visit to Arunachal Pradesh on Sunday to take part in a festival stands cancelled, considering the ongoing violent protests in the region,” an official in the ministry said.

The official, however, said there was no final word as yet whether the home minister would visit Shillong on Sunday to witness a passing-out parade at the North Eastern Police Academy. “He was earlier scheduled to visit both Arunachal Pradesh and Shillong,” the official said.

Sources in the security establishment said the protests has also cast a shadow on the India-Japan two-day summit in Guwahati to be attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Japanese counterpart Shinzo Abe from December 15.

“The top brass of the Intelligence Bureau have been asked to assess the security situation before the government takes the final decision on holding the summit. Considering the ongoing precarious situation following large-scale protests, it does not seem the summit will take place in Guwahati,” said an IPS officer attached to the home ministry.

He also expressed concern over the prevailing ground situation in Assam and said this could adversely affect the Modi government’s initiative to showcase the Northeast as a business destination.

Modi and Abe are scheduled to reach Guwahati on December 15 for the summit at a heritage bungalow overlooking the ancient Umananda Shiva temple. Business delegates from both countries are also likely to meet during the two-day summit.

The two Prime Ministers have lined up a trip to the Kaziranga National Park, a Unesco World Heritage site, before visiting Manipur’s capital Imphal on December 17 to pay tributes at the memorials of the Japanese soldiers who died during the Second World War.
