Meghalaya chief minister Conrad Sangma on Monday met Union home minister Amit Shah in New Delhi to discuss the evolving Bangladesh situation and its implications in the Northeast, which fears large-scale infiltration of minorities owing to the unrest following the resignation of the Sheikh Hasina government on August 5.
In a video released by his office, Sangma said he and deputy chief minister Prestone Tynsong had a meeting with Shah to “review” the overall situation in the border area “keeping in mind the current situation that the country of Bangladesh is going through”.
“In the review meeting, we have briefed the honourable home minister about the good work by the BSF and the Army, and very strict monitoring is being done currently by these two forces (at the border). Meghalaya police are also on high alert. We also informed him that we have imposed night curfew all along the international border to strengthen the overall security in the border zone,” he said.
He said they reiterated that “we should not allow at this point in time any individual to cross the border as the matter is very very sensitive”.
Sangma said a detailed discussion was held and Shah has said the Centre “will not allow any individual to cross over and all measures are being to ensure the border is securely guarded”. He said they have also urged the Centre through the home minister “if more manpower can be provided along the border so that security can be reinforced”.
Shah, according to Sangma, will “examine the scenario and the situation and take necessary action if necessary” vis a vis reinforcement of forces along the border.
