Allahabad High Court has rejected a PIL to recognise Shahi Idgah Mosque in Mathura as Krishna Janmabhumi, the birthplace of Lord Krishna.
The bench of Chief Justice Pritinker Diwaker and Justice Ashutosh Srivastava rejected the plea by a Mathura lawyer that Hindus should be allowed to worship at the Islamic shrine and it should be recognised as Krishna Janmabhumi.
Petitioner Mahak Maheshwari had claimed on the basis of mythology that Kans, a demon, had imprisoned Vasudeva and Devaki in a jail where the mosque is located and Krishna was born there. Later, a temple to Krishna was built at the same spot.
Hindutva groups claim that Mughal emperor Aurangzeb had demolished a portion of the temple and got a mosque constructed there.
The petition was filed in 2021.
The high court observed that around a dozen similar cases were pending in different courts and there was no need to hear this case. The court also said that the Supreme Court would decide whether such cases would be heard in a Mathura court or in Allahabad.
Maheshwari told the reporters in Mathura that he would study the court order before taking a decision to move ahead with the case.
