The Supreme Court on Thursday dismissed all 19 petitions seeking a recall of certain provisions of the Ayodhya judgment that earmarked the disputed land for the construction of a temple.

The 19 petitions included nine filed by activists and others who were not part of the original litigation. The court refused to entertain these petitions.

The 10 remaining review petitions were examined and rejected. “We have carefully gone through the review petitions and the connected papers…. We do not find any ground, whatsoever, to entertain the same,” a five-judge bench of Chief Justice S.A. Bobde, and Justices D.Y. Chandrachud, Ashok Bhushan, Abdul Nazeer and Sanjiv Khanna said.

The court dismissed prayers for an open-court hearing. Review petitions, whose success rate in India is less than 0.1 per cent, are heard in the judges’ chambers.

The review petitioners now have the option of filing a curative petition. Such pleas also have a low success rate.
