All the 20 ministers in Naveen Patnaik’s government submitted their resignations on Saturday, paving the way for a shuffle of the ministry on Sunday.

Sources said Patnaik might bring in new faces to further improve the image of his government ahead of the 2024 general election.

The chief minister seems keen to undertake a thorough revamp of his ministry after completing three years of his fifth term in office on May 29. Significantly, the reshuffle is taking place in the wake of a thorough review of the working of different departments.

Odisha Legislative Assembly Speaker Surya Naryan Patro has also submitted his resignation, triggering speculation that he might make a comeback into the ministry. The revamp will set the tone for Biju Janata Dal’s preparations for the 2024 general election.

The decision to reshuffle the ministry was delayed by a few months because of panchayat and urban elections, which were followed by the Brajaraj Nagar bypolls.

However, Patnaik took the decision to go for a reshuffle just a day after BJD registered a landslide victory in the bypoll and his government got a relief from the Supreme Court, which dismissed two of a batch of petitions challenging the work being undertaken under the Puri Heritage Corridor project that aims at the beautification of the 12th century Shree Jagannath Temple.

Sources said Patnaik will drop ministers with a tainted image and also the ones whose performance has not been satisfactory.

The new ministers will take oath at 11.45am on Sunday, the sources said.
