Shiv Sena Sanjay Raut said NCP leader Ajit Pawar's decision to join hands with the BJP is "betrayal."

Shiv Sena's Sanjay Raut on Saturday said NCP leader Ajit Pawar has stabbed the Sena in the back by joining hands with the BJP to form the government in Maharashtra.

Raut also said the state will never forgive Ajit Pawar for this act.

'Ajit Pawar has stabbed the Shiv Sena in the back. Joining hands with the BJP to form the government is betrayal,' he told reporters.

'Ajit Pawar's decision does not have the approval of NCP chief Sharad Pawar,' Raut said.

He added that Sharad Pawar and Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray will address a joint press conference soon.

The month-long political impasse ended dramatically in Maharashtra on Saturday with the BJP's Fadnavis returning as the chief minister, backed by the Sharad Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party (NCP).

NCP's Ajit Pawar was sworn-in as the deputy chief minister.

Sharad Pawar has said Ajit's decision to support the BJP to form a government in Maharashtra was his 'personal and not the NCP's'.

'Ajit Pawar's decision to support the BJP to form the Maharashtra government is his personal decision and not that of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP). We place on record that we do not support or endorse this decision of his,' the veteran leader said in a tweet.

The development comes hours after the Shiv Sena, NCP and Congress went through protracted negotiations to form a new coalition government with Sharad Pawar saying there was 'unanimity' over Uddhav Thackeray as chief minister.

In the 288-member Maharashtra Assembly, 145 MLAs constitute a majority. While the BJP has 105 MLAs, NCP has 54, the Shiv Sena 56, Congress 44 and others 29.
