Aga Khan Palace, where Mahatma Gandhi was held as a prisoner, is facing an acute water scarcity since last month as the civic body has disconnected supply due to non-payment of dues worth over Rs 1.7 crore accrued over 30 years.
The palace, maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India, receives 700 to 800 visitors on weekdays and 1,200 on weekends.
Because of the water shortage, visitors are facing problems and trees cannot be looked after properly, sources said.
The ASI has requested the Pune Municipal Corporation to provide a new water connection. The palace houses the samadhis of Kasturba Gandhi and the Mahatma's secretary Mahadev Desai, who died during the detention there in the aftermath of the Quit India movement.
The palace is one of the 17 heritage sites selected for Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, an initiative of the Narendra Modi government to commemorate 75 years of Independence.
