Rashtriya Janata Dal chief Lalu Prasad’s condition was continuously improving, son Tejashwi Yadav tweeted late on Thursday evening, after party sources here had painted a grim picture.

“He is under intense medical monitoring and his condition is continuously improving. All well-wishers, supporters, party workers and people of the country are requested not to worry due to any misleading news. Thanks,” Tejashwi, the leader of the Opposition in Bihar, tweeted.

Earlier in the day, party sources here had said Lalu Prasad was showing no body movements and that his creatinine levels suggested kidney malfunctioning.

While there was no bulletin from AIIMS Delhi, where he is admitted, Tejashwi had in the afternoon alleged a drug overdose to the 75-year-old after he fell at his home recently and suffered fractures to his right shoulder, waist and foot.

“Laluji suffered fractures at three places in the fall. An overdose of drugs given in the aftermath is also responsible for his present condition,” Tejashwi had told reporters in Delhi.

“We brought him to AIIMS Delhi because he had been treated here earlier and the doctors know his medical history.”

Tejashwi added: “He (Lalu Prasad) is being given lots of medicines. Our concern is that the current problems do not adversely impact his heart, kidneys and other organs. We had plans to take him to Singapore for a kidney transplant. We shall take the next steps according to what the doctors here suggest.”

A senior RJD leader had told The Telegraph on the condition of anonymity: “Doctors (in Patna) prescribed a heavy dose of painkillers and other medicines after he fell and suffered fractures, without considering his kidney and heart disorders or other ailments.”

Party sources in Patna said the former chief minister might be suffering from a neurological condition known as “locked-in syndrome” or “pseudo-coma”. In this state, the body’s voluntary muscles are unable to work, with the possible exception of blinking and limited eye movements, though the patient may be conscious or mentally aware.

Lalu Prasad’s creatinine level, whose normal range for adult men is between 0.9 and 1.3, has shot up to 7, indicating severe kidney malfunctioning, the sources said. An infection and fluid accumulation have been detected in his lungs, they added.

Lalu Pratap’s elder son Tej Pratap, an MLA, told reporters that doctors at AIIMS Delhi had assured the family that the patient would recover but it might take a long time.

Lalu Prasad had tripped and fallen down the stairs at his Patna home on Sunday. A day later he lost consciousness and was taken to a private hospital. He had difficulty breathing and was admitted to the intensive care unit. He was brought to Delhi via air ambulance on Wednesday evening.

The RJD leader who spoke on the condition of anonymity said: “Doctors at the private hospital in Patna kept saying he was doing well, but his body movements stopped. We are praying he becomes well.”

Lalu Prasad has long been suffering from chronic kidney disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, an enlarged prostate, nerve-related disorders and heart ailments.

His wife and former chief minister Rabri Devi, eldest daughter and Rajya Sabha member Misa Bharti and sons Tej Pratap and Tejashwi are in Delhi along with several other members of the family, including some of his grandchildren.

RJD leaders and supporters have been organising group prayers at temples, mosques and dargahs across Bihar for Lalu Prasad’s recovery.
