The Election Commission on Monday barred Yogi Adityanath from campaigning for 72 hours and Mayawati for 48 hours and also 'censured' them for making communally sensitive speeches.
The bar on campaigning will start from 6 am on April 16.
Adityanath was served the notice for his Ali-Bajrang Bali remark while addressing a rally in Meerut.
About his campaign speech, the poll watchdog said in its statement that the Uttar Pradesh chief minister had admitted that he had used the word 'Bajrang Bali' in his speech.
Mayawati was issued the notice for her speech in Deoband, in which she appealed to Muslims not to vote for a particular party. The BSP chief had prima facie violated the model code of conduct, the poll panel found.
The action of the Election Commission came on a day the Supreme Court said it wanted to know from the poll watchdog what action had been taken against the two leaders for making communally sensitive speeches. The top court has summoned a representative of the commission for Tuesday.
