Fisherfolk protesting against the Adani group’s seaport in Kerala’s Vizhinjam on Wednesday objected to chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan calling the agitation “very unfair”, organised statewide protests and resolved to remain unmoved by any pressure to back down.

“Let the chief minister and the government be aware that we are in no mood to rest until all our demands are met. And that includes shutting down the (upcoming) seaport that has already ruined the lives and livelihood of thousands of fishermen and their families,” Patrick Michael, president of the Latin Archdiocese of Trivandrum that is leading the protest, told The Telegraph on Wednesday.

Vijayan had on Tuesday told a media conference that the state had already agreed to six of the seven demands of the fisherfolk and the Latin Church that is helming the protest. “Yet the protesters continue with their agitation, demanding a complete stoppage of the construction of the seaport, that too after it was made very clear during discussions that it was not possible. It is very unfair to take such a stand,” the chief minister had said.

In a clear message to the government and Adani Vizhinjam Ports Pvt Ltd, which is constructing the Rs 7,525-crore seaport, the Vizhinjam Samara Samithi organised protests across the state on Wednesday with hundreds marching to the collectorate in each district, apart from staging a sit-in outside the state secretariat in Thiruvananthapuram. Fisherfolk and Church officials are members of the Samithi.

Michael said the protesters would not compromise on any of the demands. “Our main demand is to shut down the seaport and we are not ready to end this agitation until we are assured of fulfilling all of them. Or else we are ready for the long haul,” he said.

“These parallel protests in every district are to stress on our demands and highlight the woes of the fisherfolk who have nothing to fall back on other than our resolve to carry on with this struggle for our rights,” Michael added.

The protest committee slammed the chief minister for his remarks and said no promises had been met. “No real action has followed our demands. It is misleading to say the government has met six of our demands,” the committee alleged in a statement issued on Wednesday.

The agitation was launched on August 16 by blocking the road leading to the seaport site, stopping all construction activities as trucks carrying raw materials were unable to reach the project site. The protesters raided the site every day for a few weeks to press for their demands and eventually limited their agitation to a tent pitched on the main road to the seaport.

Kerala High Court recently ordered the state government to ensure unhindered access to the port site for the construction activities, hearing a case filed by Adani Vizhinjam Port Pvt Ltd.
