A great judgement: PM Narendra Modi hails Supreme Court verdict in JMM bribery case

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday hailed the Supreme Court’s verdict in the JMM bribery case as a “great judgement”, exhibiting a rare promptness in sharp contrast to his silence over similar key verdicts in the past.

“SWAGATAM” (Welcome),” Modi posted on X soon after the ruling by a seven-judge constitution bench of the Supreme Court.

“A great judgement by the Hon’ble Supreme Court which will ensure clean politics and deepen people’s faith in the system,” he said in the post.

In contrast, Modi had chosen silence when the Supreme Court last month struck down his government’s electoral bonds scheme, terming it “unconstitutional”. The scheme allowed anonymous funding to political parties and the court ruled that it violated the right to information under the Constitution.

The BJP, too, has not come up with an official response despite promising to present “a structured” reply after going through the lengthy judgment.

Modi’s prompt response over the top court ending immunity from prosecution to MPs and MLAs for taking bribes to vote in the legislature was seen as an effort to strengthen his corruption attack on Opposition leaders.
